Children and Adolescents’ Resources in Education (CARE)
Leaving PACT to open her own business, Jackie Barnes wrote the grant proposal to the Hawaii Department of Health to provide seed money for CARE, a newly formed for-profit company providing children with psychological services related to their school performance. With direction from CARE’s owners, Jackie Barnes wrote the proposal funded for $12 million.
Bay Area Food Bank
The Bay Area Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, serves the people of the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to the Florida panhandle. Jackie Barnes wrote 55 grant proposals for the food bank with the support of her staff, the executive director, and the program directors. She combined grant writing, with direct solicitation, direct mail, special events, and website improvements to bring in $1.5 million dollars to the food bank in just 18 months.
Parents and Children Together (PACT)
Jackie Barnes gained significant grant writing experience at federal and state levels while at PACT, a large social service agency in Honolulu. During her seven years of employment at PACT, she wrote or helped write many successful grant proposals. The largest was submitted by a team lead by the Hawaii Housing Authority (HHA) written to the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department. It awarded the grant of $1 million for drug elimination and community development in their housing projects on Oahu.
Spring Hill College
Springhill College, a venerable Jesuit College in Mobile, Alabama, is ranked among the top 20 Southern colleges and universities in U.S. News & World Report's “America's Best Colleges.” As their Foundation Relations Development Officer, Jackie Barnes continued writing successful grant proposals and learned the art of direct solicitation of major donors at Springhill College.
University of Hawaii Foundation
As the Director of Scholarships and Special Events at the University of Hawaii Foundation, Jackie Barnes fulfilled two distinct roles simultaneously. As Director of Scholarships, she met with university department heads and donors to create new scholarships and/or manage existing ones and to award them to recipient students. As Director of Special Events, she oversaw many donor events from a small, intimate holiday dinner at the university president’s home to honor the university’s highest-level donors to a large stadium event thanking the supporters of the university’s athletic programs. In these two capacities, Jackie Barnes honed her skills for working directly with donors and in planning donor events.
